The fishing industry struggles with high levels of bycatch, operational inefficiencies, and tightening sustainability regulations. Key issues included:
Unintended catch remained high due to traditional vessel layouts and gear configurations. The vessel concept was engineered to naturally reduce bycatch through layout, workflow improvements, and gear integration, making sustainability easier for fishermen to apply in real operations.
Being nominated to present this project to industry leaders, policymakers, and sustainability experts was a meaningful milestone early in my career.
It demonstrated that well-researched, practical design can contribute to large-scale environmental challenges — even in traditional industries like commercial fishing. For me, this project was foundational. It combined engineering, environmental impact, and user-centered thinking in a way that continues to shape how I design products and platforms today.
Next projects.
